There are several reasons why having a workout partner will almost certainly yield better results in the pursuit of your health and fitness goals than trying to go it alone. In addition to the obvious pleasure of having a friend alongside during almost any activity, here are five reasons why exercising with someone else is beneficial.
- You’re almost certain to be more consistent when you know someone is counting on you to show up. The little excuses that might delay or prevent you from your workout will disappear when you contemplate disappointing your “fitness buddy”. It only makes sense that your workout goals are much more likely to be achieved when you are persistent.
- You are much less likely to get bored when you work out with a partner. Besides the distraction of good conversation, your partner will suggest alternatives to the routine that will keep things fresh, adding to both the amount and variety of exercise you get.
- Having another person with you will absolutely make you more motivated to complete a productive session. Don’t think you can finish that last shoulder-press rep on the functional trainer or the final 5 minutes of jogging on the treadmill? A bit of healthy competition or the mindset of, “If she can do it, I can certainly do it” will be just the push you need for better results.
- Being able to rely on a friend is a relief in any stressful situation – and that can include the stress you put on your body and mind with an intense workout. According to the Mayo Clinic, exercise provides stress relief, pumps your body with feel-good endorphins, and improves your mood. The encouragement of a friend will increase all those positive outcomes.
- Everyone knows that having someone close by to “spot” you when weightlifting provides safety. That way you can push yourself to complete that last rep and really tighten, tone or build muscle. And if, for example, you’re running or biking outside, there is certainly safety in numbers.
